Our NOT-depressing look at 9\11, the media and pop culture | The Pod Bay Doors Movie Podcast

On the 20th anniversary of September 11th, Doug and Jerry take a different look at the tragedy, examining how popular culture and the media have been changed by these events. We tried to be respectful but also informative and (when appropriate) light-hearted.

The Gunfighter (1950) | Pod Bay Doors Podcast, Episode #203

This episode, Doug and Jerry cover one of Doug’s favorite westerns: The Gunfighter (1950) directed by Henry King, starring Gregory Peck. It’s an atypical-for-its-time western, more at home in the “anti-westerns” of modern film. Johnny Ringo (Peck) wants out of the gunfighter lifestyle, unfortunately his reputation is so big, he can’t go anywhere without being recognized. For its heavy themes of reputation, mortality, and morality, there is an undercurrent of humanity and humor that lifts the film up from it’s impending dread. The Gunfighter is a unique studio gem that gives viewers a lot to think about long after the film ends.

Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) | The Pod Bay Doors Movie Podcast, Episode #202

Dog Day Afternoon (1975) | The Pod Bay Doors Movie Podcast, Episode #199

This episode, we are finally able to kick off our annual Pride Month with Sidney Lumet’s classic Dog Day Afternoon. This is the one that is famous for Al Pachino yelling “Attica!” but it’s also about Pachino’s robbing a bank to get money for his trans partner’s gender reassignment surgery, not something that was often seen in mainstream movies of the day, and especially not the part that an actor like Pachino would normally do, being at the height of his popularity as he was. As tender as it is tense, Dog Day Afternoon is one of the landmark films of the 1970s.

Three LGBTQ films of the 1960s | Pod Bay Doors – A Movie Podcast

This episode, Jerry and Doug wrap up their abridged Pride Month with Jerry’s selection of three films from the 1960s that depicted the LGBTQ+, not usually in a very good light. The first is The Children’s Hour (1961), directed by William Wyler and starring Shirley MacLaine, Audrey Hepburn and James Garner from a play by Lillian Hellman, the second is Advise and Consent (1962) directed by Otto Preminger and starring just about everyone working in cinema at the time, and the third is Robert Aldrich’s The Killing of Sister George (1968). All three directed by powerhouse directors and two of them starring many of Hollywood’s best actors (Sister George really only has Susannah York as an actor of note in the US, with the other actors largely British television actors). All three show the extraordinary difficulty it was to be LGBTQ+ before there were any legal protections. They may not be fun movies, but they were bold for their day and worth discussing.

Ghostbusters II | Pod Bay Doors: A Movie Podcast, Episode 197

Week 3 of going #2 brings us to possibly the most tragic of them all: Ghostbusters 2. The film isn’t tragic, the fact it was so terrible is. Actively disliked by most of the people involved, it’s the sequel nobody wanted to make and certainly not the one the original deserved,

Men in Black II | Pod Bay Doors: A Movie Podcast, Episode 195

This episode, Jerry and Doug continue thier trek through number 2’s with another shameless cash grab, this time it’s a movie that needed and deserved a sequel and got…this. Welcome to Men in Black II, the very definition of redundant. First, it’s really short, secone it spends too much of it’s short runtime on undoing the first one.
